According to the report, comparing the figures to the same period last year, there has been a noticeable increase of 27% in the number of murders. By June 8 last year, Nagpur had experienced 27 murders, indicating a rise in violent incidents this year. Interestingly, the Old Kamptee Police Station stands out as it has not reported any murder cases in the past two and a half years.

The statistics highlight the impact of two specific police stations, Yashodhara Nagar and Kalamna, on the overall murder ratio. Both stations have underperformed in terms of crime prevention, with each recording six murder cases this year. These cases alone contribute to 36% of the total murders in the city so far, the report added.

The report further said that in response to the crime trend, Nagpur’s Commissioner of Police, Amitesh Kumar, has devised a strategy called the “top 20” formula. Under this approach, each crime category, such as bodily offenses, vehicle thefts, burglaries, and robberies, will be closely monitored. The police stations and Crime Branch have been instructed to focus on apprehending the most notorious criminals who top the crime charts. Commissioner Kumar emphasized the priority of identifying and apprehending repeat offenders and employing effective policing measures to ensure they are held accountable.

To enhance crime management, each police station and crime unit has received additional manpower and specific policing objectives to achieve. The objective is to empower the officers and provide them with the necessary resources to effectively combat crime.

The report further highlights individual police stations’ murder statistics. For instance, the Sitabuldi Police Station, after reporting no murders in both 2021 and 2022, has recorded two murders this year. Similarly, the Hudkeshwar Police Station has reported three murders. Historically, Nagpur has witnessed an average of eight murders per month over the past 20 years. However, this year’s average stands at around seven murders per month.

In addition to murders, the Nagpur police have also expressed concern over the rise in attempted murder cases. Until June 8, 54 cases of attempted murder were registered across different police stations, marking an increase of 11 cases compared to the previous year.

The report said that the Commissioner Kumar assured the public that measures are being taken to control gang rivalries and prevent their involvement in murder cases. However, he acknowledged the challenge of preventing household violence, particularly cases where husbands, wives, or partners commit acts of violence against each other. The Bharosa Cell, a family violence redressal unit within the city police, has been working tirelessly to address household tensions and inter-relationship issues.

Apart from focusing on violent crimes, the Commissioner has urged the police stations to pay attention to juvenile offenders. Recent statistics indicate a significant number of crimes involving juveniles, prompting the need for proactive measures to address this issue. In addition to cracking down on illegal activities such as gambling dens and bootlegging, the police will prioritize the rehabilitation and prevention of juvenile delinquency.

With the implementation of the “top 20” formula and the allocation of additional resources, Nagpur’s police force aims to effectively manage crime and maintain law and order in the city. The Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, expressed his determination to tackle the prevailing challenges and ensure a safer environment for the residents of Nagpur.
