631 farmers committed suicide in Nagpur district in 16 years

Nagpur: The Nagpur District witnessed a total of 631 farmers committing suicide for various reasons in the past 16 years i.e. from 2001 to 2016 (till September 30). Out of the 642 cases of suicides, 241 cases were eligible in terms of compensation and 383 cases were termed as ineligible. Seven cases are pending for investigation. The kin of 241 farmers were paid compensation of Rs 2.41 crore which turns out to be Rs 1 lakh each.

This information was provided by office of District Collector in response to an RTI query posed by activist Abhay Kolarkar.
No farmer committed suicide in the year 2001 but the year 2008 recorded a maximum of 82 farmers ending their lives followed by 73 in 2006. The break-up of remaining years is as follows: In the year 2002, five farmers took the extreme step, 4 in 2003, 21 in 2004, 15 in 2005, 65 in 2007, 58 in 2009, 62 in 2010, 36 in 2011, 28 in 2012, 27 in 2013, 60 in 2014, 55 in 2015 and 40 in 2016 (till September).
