Nagpur: In a major operation amid the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the upcoming State Assembly elections, the State Excise Department seized 448 sealed bottles of foreign liquor, valued at Rs 38.69 lakh, from Nagpur’s Om Nagar area on Koradi Road on Sunday.
The confiscated items, which included Scotch Whisky, Vodka, and other high-end liquor, were designated for sale in Haryana and were illegally transported into Maharashtra, where their sale is prohibited.
The raid took place at a residence in Sant Dnyaneshwar Society, Plot No 31, owned by Vijay Dharamadas Asudani, and was conducted under Jaripatka Police Station jurisdiction. The alleged stock owner, Amit Bhagchand Chelani, was apprehended when he arrived at the scene in his vehicle, which was later searched and found to contain more of the illegal liquor.
The operation also led to the arrest of Chelani’s assistant, Rajkumar Hiranand Ramdasani, and the house owner, Asudani. All three individuals were detained under multiple sections of the Mumbai Liquor Act, 1949, for their involvement in the illegal transport and storage of prohibited liquor.
The raid and investigation were led by Inspector Wickham More of the State Excise, B Division, Nagpur, with a team comprising Inspectors Mangesh Kawle, Shailesh Ajmire, Assistant Sub-Inspector Shirish Deshmukh, and Constables Dhaval Tijare, Ankush Bhokare, and Prashant Ghavle.
Deputy Superintendent Atul Kothalwar supervised the operation, which included extensive efforts from Inspectors Mohan Patil, Anand Pawar, Jayendra Jathar, Balaji Chalniwar, and Sub Inspector Sagar Wankhede, among others.
