289 motorists booked for drunk driving on Holi in Nagpur

Nagpur: Police in Nagpur booked 289 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol on ‘Holi’ and ‘Dhulivandan.’ Similarly, the Traffic Branch booked 7,537 motorists under the Motor Vehicle Act for violating various other traffic rules and collected a compounding amount of Rs 4.37 lakh as fine from them.

On the first day of Holi festival, cops initiated action against 3,815 traffic offenders. On ‘Dhulivandan,’ the traffic cops booked 3,722 for violating traffic rules. Police had conducted a special drive against drunk driving in view of the festival and intensified security checks across the Second Capital for safe ‘Holi’ celebrations.

About 550 traffic cops from 10 zones, led by DCP Shashikant Satav, were deployed since early Monday morning at various checkpoints. The overall traffic violation cases rose by 10 to 20% during the day. Against an average of 3,000 traffic violations, the city traffic police on Monday booked 3,245 violators.

Though on the eve of Holi and on Holi as many 289 drivers were caught for driving under the influence of liquor, the city roads witnessed four accidents including two fatal ones reported under the jurisdictions of Pardi, Pachpaoli, Sakkardara and Kamptee police stations.

The data from the DCP traffic office revealed that of the 289 drunk driving cases, Sadar traffic zone saw the highest number of cases — 46 on both days. It was followed by Lakadganj and Indora zones with 33 each.

Though the special drive against revellers started on March 24, the traffic police’s focus was those indulging in driving under the influence of liquor. On Saturday night the city traffic police nabbed 22 drivers and booked them under 185 of Motor Vehicle Act.

Of the 6,404 traffic violation cases, the highest number of violators were two-wheeler riders (5,143) who were nabbed for riding vehicles without helmets, 294 for triple seat and 158 were booked for jumping the red signal.

With 1,523 cases, traffic cops from Ajni zone caught the highest number of motorists violating motor vehicles act. It was followed by Lakadganj and Indora zones — 1,004 and 928 cases, respectively. The traffic cops issued them challans and sent their cases to Motor Vehicle Court.
