287 structures in Nagpur found worn-out, risky: NMC survey

Nagpur: In the wake of nature’s fury wreaking havoc in Nagpur on Tuesday, a survey carried out by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has found 287 structures in the city as risky and worn-out. After reviewing the NMC’s monsoon preparedness on Tuesday, the Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B directed the Enforcement Department and zonal offices to get such structures vacated and demolish them.

As per the survey, the highest number of dilapidated buildings are under Gandhibagh Zone (85), followed by Mangalwari (50), Dhantoli (49 ) and Dharampeth (46). Laxmi Nagar Zone failed to submit the latest report of dilapidated structures in South-West Nagpur.

The Municipal Commissioner said that the entire NMC machinery should be ready to meet any emergencies during monsoon. Complaints received from citizens during monsoon should be immediately responded to and acted upon, the civic chief said.

The role and function of the NMC’s Fire and Emergency Services Department is very important during the rainy season. In order to reach out to the maximum number of citizens in a flood-like situation, 24×7 control rooms will be set up in all 10 zones and at NMC’s headquarters in Civil Lines, informed Chief Fire Officer Rajendra Uchake in the review meeting.

Radhakrishnan also directed officials to accelerate the work of cleaning rivers, nullahs and stormwater networks across the city. He also told officials to act at the zonal level regarding the accumulation of water in the basement of any building and instructed to survey such structures where water accumulates in the basement so that preventive steps can be initiated.

The number of dilapidated structures in each zone are: Dharampeth — 46, Hanuman Nagar — 14, Dhantoli — 14, Nehru Nagar– 49, Gandhibagh– 85, Satranjipura – 11, Lakadganj– 8, Ashi Nagar—10, and Mangalwari Zone – 50. Laxminagar Zone has not submitted data.
