23 hospitals face NMC heat for haphazard disposal of bio-medical waste

Nagpur: After the erring citizens who faced penal action from Nuisance Detection Squads of NagpurMunicipal Corporation (NMC) for spitting, urinating in public places and dumping building materials on roads, it was now the turn of hospitals to face the heat.

Acting tough, Nuisance Detection Squads of NMC cracked a whip on 23 hospitals in city for haphazard disposal of bio-medical waste. The offending hospitals were penalised and fined Rs. 2.19 lakh across the 10 Zones of civic body. On Tuesday, one of the squads while on the move found violation of norms in Sitabuldi area where a hospital dumped the bio-medical waste in open. The said hospital was fined Rs. 25,000 by Dharampeth Zone. The action was initiated by team leader Ashish Katre.

The Nuisance Detection Squads of NMC are part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to cleanse the urban space and provide a healthy environment for living in city.

The squads were established on December 11, 2017 and till October 15, 2019, they have taken action against 23 hospitals for violation of rules. Most of the actions were taken in Laxminagar Zone.
