Nagpur: In a major national exercise aimed at strengthening welfare planning and data-driven governance, the 16th National Census will commence in Nagpur from May 1, with authorities rolling out a fully digital, two-phase enumeration process for the first time at this scale.

Carrying the theme “Census for Public Welfare”, the initiative will begin with a self-enumeration phase from May 1 to May 15, during which citizens will be able to submit their details online. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has urged residents to actively participate and complete their entries digitally, calling it a crucial national responsibility.

To execute the exercise across the city, the NMC has deployed an extensive workforce of 4,500 enumerators and 700 supervisors. Each enumerator will be responsible for collecting data from approximately 800 residents, reflecting the scale and intensity of the operation.

Following the self-enumeration phase, a door-to-door verification drive will be conducted from May 16 to June 14, during which officials will physically visit households and record data using the HLO (House Listing Operation) mobile application.

Citizens can submit their information through the official portal se.census.gov.in, accessible via mobile phones and computers. The platform supports 16 languages, making it inclusive and user-friendly.

After completing the online process, households will receive a unique 11-digit SE ID, which must be preserved and presented to enumerators during verification visits. Officials have stressed that this ID is mandatory for validation, making it a critical part of the process.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar has issued a stern warning to staff, stating that any negligence or delay in the census process will invite strict disciplinary action. He has directed all personnel to ensure accurate, error-free data collection using digital tools, underlining the importance of precision in such a large-scale national exercise.

The census will gather comprehensive data through 33 structured questions, covering:

• Housing Details: Structure type, construction materials (walls, roof, floor), condition, usage, and ownership status.

• Household Information: Number of residents, family head details, caste category (SC/ST/OBC), number of married couples, and room availability.

• Basic Amenities: Drinking water source, electricity access, toilet facilities, drainage systems, kitchen availability, LPG/PNG connections, and primary cooking fuel.

Building on 2011 Baseline

As per the 2011 Census, Nagpur’s population stood at 24.05 lakh, including 12.25 lakh males and 11.80 lakh females. Officials expect significant demographic changes since then, making the upcoming census crucial for urban planning, infrastructure development, and welfare schemes.

With the city expanding rapidly and civic demands increasing, authorities have described the census as a backbone for policy decisions and resource allocation. The success of the digital census will depend heavily on public participation, accuracy of data, and timely execution.

The administration has appealed to citizens to cooperate fully, complete self-enumeration within the deadline, and contribute to shaping future governance through accurate data.
