11 dead, several injured in twin blasts at Brussels Zaventem airport

Two explosions ripped through Brussels airport on Tuesday during the morning rush hour as hundreds of passengers were trying to check in with authorities saying the blasts caused several injuries.

According to reports,11 people have been killed in the blasts.

Airport spokeswoman Anke Fransen said: “There were two blasts in the departure hall. First aid team are in place for help.”

Passengers were led onto the tarmac and the crisis centre urged people not to come to the airport.

The explosions happened only days after the prime suspect in the Paris attacks Salah Abdeslam was arrested in Brussels.

Sky news in London said the blasts had occurred in the departures lounge and cited reports it had occurred near the American Airlines desk.

Belgian media said rail traffic to the airport was suspended.

A photo circulating on social media shows travelers outside the airport running out entrance with bags in hand.
