After NDA was established at Khadakwasla, Pune in 1954, it was observed that though NDA was in Maharashtra, Maharashtra was not in NDA as the number of Maharashtrian boys getting into NDA was minuscule. It was decided by the Government of Maharashtra that a committee be formed to study the issue in depth and suggest the solutions and methods that could address this issue. Accordingly a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Lt Gen SPP Thorat, (Retd), Kirti Chakra, Padmashree, DSO. On the recommendations of the committee the unique SERVICES PREPARATORY INSTITUTE (SPI) was established at Aurangabad in 1977 with an aim of preparing boys academically, mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy and other Defence Academies. SPI is a dedicated feeder to the National Defence Academy (NDA), 10 + 2 Technical Entry Scheme (B.Tech.) and the Naval Academy (NAVAC) B.Tech. The Institute aims to send maximum boys to the NDA / Army Engineering College/ NAVAC. Hence the stress is on complete education and all-round personality development. The Institute provides personalized coaching for UPSC (NDA) written entrance examination. The training and the curriculum at the SPI is formulated in such a way that, they are automatically prepared to appear before the Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews.

The Institute has so far trained 1050 cadets out of which 466 have joined the Defence Services in officer cadre (112 fighter pilots in Air Force, 82 in Indian Navy). 2 of SPI cadets have been awarded Kirti Chakra, 3 cadets Shaurya Chakra and 14 cadets awarded with Sena Medals/ Vayu Medals for their gallantry.

Although SPI (Services Preparatory Institute) was established forty years ago by the Government of Maharashtra to prepare eligible Maharashtrian boys to join the Officer Cadre of the Defence Services, very few students from Nagpur and Vidarbha actually join this elite Institute due to lack of awareness and proper grooming by the armed forces officers.

This year, free seminar to guide and motivate 10th standard students (boys) to join SPI Aurangabad has been organized by ‘Yahwantrao Chavan Pratishthan’ Nagpur Centre, ‘Sahitya Prasar Kendra Trust’ and ‘The Forces Foundation’ at 1000 hours (10 AM morning) on 06 November 2016 at ‘Sai Sabhagruha’ Shankar Nagar Behind Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur. 10th standard students (boys) are cordially invited to attend the free seminar on 06 November 2016 at ‘Sai Sabhagruha’ Shankar Nagar Nagpur. Organisers have appealed that maximum students (boys) should attend this seminar for ensuring a bright future by joining a premier training establishment of Maharashtra at 10 + 2 level. Parents are also requested to accompany the students.
