Birthday celebration turns tragic as four youth meet watery grave at Zilpi lake in Nagpur

Birthday celebrations turned awry when four youth met watery grave at Zilpi Lake in Mohgaon village on March 10, 2015. The incident occurred at 2:30 pm on March 10, 2015, when four boys and five girls had gone to celebrate the birthday of one of the drowned youth.

According to sources, the youth were in the age group of 20-21 years. The deceased are identified as

  1. Sajju Ashok Dakate (Girl) aged 20 years and a resident of Shantinagar.
  2. Gaurav Hiramal Maudekar aged 21 years and a resident of Pachpaoli.
  3. Suraj Kushal Wakodikar aged 21 years and a resident of Golibar Square.
  4. Shubham Punaji Umredkar aged 20 years and a resident of Pachpaoli.

Four boys and five girls had gone to Zilpi Lake at Mohgaon Village in Hingna to celebrate the birthday of Gaurav Hiramal Maudekar. They had gone on their motorcycles. They had taken the birthday cake and other eatables too. Before the cutting of the cake, all of them went near the lake to wash their hands and feet.

The deceased girl Sajju Ashok Dakate entered the lake and she lost the foot-hold or slipped and fell into deep waters. In order to save her, Gaurav, Suraj and Shubham jumped into the water. When the fourth boy Nitin Umakant Nikhare aged 20 years and a resident of Tandapeth saw the four drowning he went near the water but did not enter the lake since he did not know swimming.

Nitin and the other four girls shouted for help and some of the villagers ran to help them. However by then all the four youth had already drowned and died.

Within two hours, police arrived at the spot and with the help of villagers they fished out the bodies of the victims and shifted them to the mortuary of Rural Hospital in Hingna.

Every year, one or the other youth meet watery grave in this ill-omened Zilpi Lake. However, still many city youth go to the Lake to enjoy their picnics.

Deputy Superintendent of Police S Wanjari and MLA Vikas Kumbhare consoled the families of the deceased at the Hingna Rural Hospital.

Further investigations are done by Assistant Police Inspector S P Khadke, Police Sub Inspector Kaundekar and staff under the guidance of Police Inspector Deepak Wankhede.
