Maharashtra Congress takes out tractor rally against farm laws in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Congress on Saturday gheraoed Raj Bhavan in Nagpur to demand withdrawal of the Centre’s new farm laws and protest against rising fuel price. The action was followed by the tweet posted by Maharashtra Congress Chief, Balasaheb Thorat on Friday. He said the party will observe the day as ‘Kisan Adhikar Divas’ across the state.Thousands of Congress workers and farmers took out a tractor rally today holding cylinder banners to protest against LPG gas rates.

“Jumlebazi band karo, ab mehgai khatam karo,”, “Bhuka insaan, maje me shaitan,”, “Garibo ka apman, nahi sahega hindustan,” were the captions on the banners and raised slogans against the Central government in front of the Raj Bhavan here.Enacted in September, the three farm laws have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country.

However, the protesting farmers have expressed the apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of the MSP and do away with the “mandi” (wholesale market) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat, ministers Sunil Kedar, Vijay Waddetiwar, Bhai Jagtap and Nitin Raut several other party leaders participated in the rally.

The rally was earlier supposed to be held in Mumbai, but venue for the protest was changed in the last minute to coincide with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari”s visit to Nagpur from January 12 to 17.Today is the 52th day since the farmers have been sitting on Dharna outside the national capital(Delhi) demanding rollback of the three “anti-farmer agriculture laws”.
