Cyber scammer dupes woman of Rs 51,516

Nagpur: A young woman lost Rs 51,516 within a few minutes of sharing an one time password (OTP) with a cyber scammer posing as a credit card executive of her bank. Jayashree Saku Rathod (27), a resident of Flat No 303, Pramila Apartment, near Pande Memorial Hospital, Sathe Marg, Dhantoli, had recieved a call on her cellphone around 5 pm on November 30. Impersonating as a bank executive, the caller told her that she had scored some points on her credit card.

He also told her that she would lose the points if she failed to activate her credit card.

On the pretext of activating her credit card, he generated an OTP using her name. He then asked her to share it with him after procuring her personal bank details. Within minutes, Jayashree was stunned when she received a message from the bank that Rs 51, 516 were debited from her account.

Following Jayashree’s complaint, Dhantoli Police registered a case under Sections 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 66 (c)(d) of the InformationTechnology Act, and started the probe.
