    CM Thackeray, Dy CM Pawar will inaugurate ‘Jail Tourism’ on Jan 26: HM Anil Deshmukh 

    Nagpur: “Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will inaugurate the ‘Jail Tourism’ initiative at Yerwada Jail on January 26, 2021, Republic Day, to facilitate tourists to visit these historical places,” Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh informed media on Saturday.
    HM Deshmukh was addressing the press conference at Police Station Gymkhana, Civil Lines regarding Maharashtra Government’s decision to start ‘Jail Tourism’ in the state.
    “Various jails in Maharashtra, including Yerwada, Thane, Nashik, Dhule & Ratnagiri, have a unique significance in the history of the Indian freedom struggle. Several freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Motilal Nehru, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu, who contributed to the independence of the country had been imprisoned in Yerawada jail. The ‘Poona Pact’ that refers to an agreement between Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar & Mahatma Gandhi was signed at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune,” said Deshmukh while asserting, why Yerwada Jail was first chosen for the pilot project.

    “Daily 50 visitors will be allowed, there will be tourism guide to explain the important spots and their historic importance to the visitors. Visitors will also have to give their details on the letter head of the institution. Proper Covid-19, precautions will be taken. Even care will be taken that security of the jail will not be harmed due to tourism,” said the Home Minister.
    An application to visit can be sent in person or email to Superintendent Yerwada Jail  mailed id [email protected] or [email protected] 7 days prior to the visit.
    Personal identity proof will be required during the visit. Eatables, mobile, camera etc will not be allowed during the visit. The ticket charges for school children will be Rs 5, for college students Rs 10 and for adults Rs 50.
