New Delhi: In what could trigger a huge debate, four senior most judges of the Supreme Court on Friday questioned the working of the institution and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra. In an unprecedented move, the four Justices -Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph – appeared before the media putting out their grievances.

“We owe a responsibility to the institution and the nation. Our efforts have failed in convincing CJI to take steps to protect the institution,” said Justice Jasti Chelameswar addressing the media at his residence.

“With no pleasure we are compelled take the decision to call a press conference. The administration of the SC is not in order and many things which are less than desirable have happened in last few months,” he added.

Justice Chelameshwar said that they had also met Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and submitted a letter with their concerns to him, but their efforts failed.

Responding to a question whether CJI Misra should be impeached, Justice Chelameswar said,” Let the nation decide that.”

“There is an issue of assignment of a case which is raised in that letter (to CJI),” said Justice Ranjan Gogoi. When asked whether the case was related to the mysterious death of CBI Judge BH Loya, he said, “Yes.”
