Traffic cops assaulted on Manewada square

Nagpur: Two traffic constables were brutally assaulted by two accused in Manewada area falling within the jurisdiction of Hudkeshwar Police Station. The assault on the Traffic Police constable of East Nagpur Traffic Department occurred on the road to Besa when he was carrying out his duties on October 19, 2016 at around 8:30 pm.

The Traffic Constables are identified as Police Head Constable (traffic) Ramchandra Nanaji Rohankar aged 47 years and a resident of Quarter No 108/3, Raghuji Nagar Police Quarters and Police Constable Rahul Arunrao Khalatkar aged 30 years and a resident of Ayodhya Nagar, Near Sai Mandir.

The two accused are identified as Gunwant Wamanrao Tumsare aged 50 years and Shubham Gunwant Tumsare aged 22 years both residents of Plot No 7, Amba Nagar, Manewada, Besa Road. There were three other persons who were also involved in assaulting the traffic cops. Not only did they abuse the traffic cops with vulgar language, they assaulted them with weapons. The assailants hit one of the traffic cops with a lathi on his head in an attempt to kill him.

Based on the complaint lodged by the traffic constables, Woman Police Sub Inspector P U Bhoyar of Hudkeshwar Police Station registered a case under Sections 143, 147, 148, 149, 307, 353, 186, 332, 333, 323, 294 and 506 (B) of Indian Penal Code and under Section 135 of Maharashtra Police Act.

The cops managed to arrest Gunwant Wamanrao Tumsare. He is slated to be presented in the court on October 20, 2016. The cops of Hudkeshwar Police Station are investigating into the case.

Nagpur city too is now waking-up to the dangers faced by traffic cops on duty. Many of us do not even realize that hundreds of such attacks have been recorded over the past few years. Statistics provided by the traffic department show assaults on as many as 208 Traffic Department personnel in Mumbai alone in a span of four and a half years.
