Three brothers, convicted in a 2012 murder case, were on Friday (November 21) awarded life imprisonment by the District and Sessions Court here. However, the father of the three convicts has been acquitted for want of evidence. The three brothers had murdered a youth Mithun Raut by pouring petrol and then setting him ablaze over a mere Rs 1500 credit amount.
The District and Sessions Court Judge K K Sonavane found the three brothers – Vinod Umredkar (26), Dharmendra Umredkar (29) and Harishchandra Umredkar (34) – guilty of the murder. The Judge, however, acquitted their father for want of evidence.
According to prosecution, the Umredkar family was running scrap business (Kabadi shop) and all were residents of Nandanvan Slums. Of the three brothers, Vinod is physically handicapped. Vinod had given Rs 1500 to his friend Mithun Raut over a work. However, Mithun Raut was frequently refusing to return the money to Vinod for some excuse or the other. However, the simple looking deal took the worst turn on February 12, 2012 night when Vinod, in a well-planned conspiracy, took Mithun Raut to his Kabadi Shop on his Scooty. After reaching the shop, Vinod and his two brothers demanded return of Rs 1500 from Mithun. On Mithun’s refusal, the three enraged brothers poured petrol on him and set him afire. As a result, Mithun received 50 percent burn injuries and was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). However, Mithun succumbed to his burn injuries on February 16, 2012. The cops had chargesheeted the three brothers and their father as well in the murder case.
Pronouncing the judgment in the case, the District and Sessions Court sentenced the three brothers Vinod Umredkar, Dharmendra Umredkar and Harishchandra Umredkar to life imprisonment. The Court, however, acquitted their father for want of evidence.
