New Delhi: Indian woman Uzma, who was allegedly forced to marry a man in Pakistan at gun point, returned to India on Thursday, a day after she was granted permission by Islamabad High Court.
Welcoming her back to India, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted, “Uzma – Welcome home India’s daughter. I am sorry for all that you have gone through.” Uzma returned via Wagah Border in Attari with full security measures. “Very happy to hear that Uzma is back, but don’t know when she will be back in Delhi, since her flight is delayed,” said her brother Wasim Ahmad.

Uzma had on May 19 submitted her reply in the Islamabad HC and had reiterated she wanted to return to India. She had alleged that her Pakistani husband Tahir Ali forced her to marry him at gunpoint. Uzma had reportedly alleged that she was sedated, tortured and forced to sign a nikah nama at gunpoint in Pakistan.
Uzma (20), who hails from New Delhi, had reportedly sought refuge at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad alleging that her Pakistani husband Tahir Ali, whom she met in Malaysia, made her sign the Nikah Nama at gunpoint. She also said that she was sedated, assaulted, tortured mentally and physically by the man in Pakistan who had invited her to visit his family and provided the requisite sponsorship letter to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi for her visa.
On Wednesday, Uzma’s brother thanked Sushma Swaraj for her effort in bringing back his sister to India. “The Indian government has done more than expected for Uzma,” said Uzma’s brother Wasim Ahmad.
“We are very happy that my sister would be soon coming back to India. The government has done for us more than expected. On our one request, Sushma Swaraj did what seemed impossible to us,” said Ahmad.
