Nagpur: Sukhwinder Singh
who is one of the reputed Bollywood playback singers was in the city to perform at Nagpur Mahotsav organized by Nagpur Municipal Corporation on January 26, 2015.

To start with, he revved the spirits of the crowd. Dressed in a Denim shirt and jeans, Sukhwinder greeted the audience in Marathi which had the crowds practically eating out of his hands. He said that today, he is getting a special gift. That is a basket full of Nagpuri Oranges. He went on to cheer the crowd by saying that Nagpur is now competing with Mumbai. He claimed that he is a “Maharashtrian” since he lives here and his Karma-bhumi is Mumbai.

DSC_1415As expected, Singh performed the number which got his due recognition from Mani Ratnam’s 1998 film Dil Se. He rendered “Chaiyya Chaiyya” composed by A. R. Rahman and written by Gulzar and sung in duet with a co-singer from his own group Madhavi Shrivastava.

Sukhwinder Singh’s singing displayed strong folk influences and Sufi notes. He had his own permutations and combinations with Sa re ga ma pa da ni sa and the reverse Pa ni da pa ma ga re sa etc entwined within the song.

In between, he called one of the dancers from Delhi named Kavita. He claimed that she is a brilliant dancer. The dancer presented a very erotic number.

After the dance, Sukhwinder resumed singing the song with the interlude of “Chaiyya Chaiyya” or “Mera Nagma Nagma Mera Kalma Kalma”. With Boom Boxes spewing out beats reverberating in the stadium, Sukhwinder presented an extended version of the song.

This song was followed by one of the famous Bollywood songs from Hindi Movie ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’, “Haule Haule Se Ho Jayega Pyar…” This time he had five boys and five girls who presented a dance to accompany his singing.

DSC_1397Sukhwinder is definitely a performer who knows how to gauge the mood and temperament of the crowd and present the songs which would definitely evoke cheers and claps.

He went to claim how Vishal Bharadwaj had offered him to sing “Bismil Bismil” the lyrics of which was penned by Gulzar and music composed by Vishal Bhardwaj for Haider Film. He went on claim that some music can shatter your pride. He sang the song “Bismil Bismil” with a very Sufi touch.

During the performance, he went to pick up a small hand-held drum and claimed that this is something he has started recently and went to play the drum giving beats to the song.

After the song, he reiterated what he had said to the media persons that abusive words (Apashabd) should be avoided in music. He said that such words should be censored. However, he went on to sing the song “Bidi Jalailey Jigar Se Piya”. However, in between the song, he said that a very subtle word expressing very erotic concept in interlaced very beautifully by Gulzar in the song. He presented this song too in an extended version.

However, after the song, when suddenly the electrically triggered fire-cracker went off, he said please ask him or warn him before setting the cracker to go off.

This was followed by another popular number “Dil Mey Mere Darde Disco” from Hindi Movie ‘Om Shanti Om’. This time again the dancers had the Chinese folding Fans with which they presented a beautiful dance.

After that he presented a number ‘Nasha Hi Nasha Hai’ from his own album. So passionate is he with the number that on his own request and permission from the crowd, he performed the same number again.

He had the crowd going gaga over every move. The Nagpur citizens definitely had a treat on the grand finale of Nagpur Mahotsav.
