National Achievement Surveys for Evaluating Quality of Education Imparted in Schools

Nagpur News: The Government of India through the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been conducting National Achievement Surveys (NAS) for classes III, V and VII / VIII to provide information about the learning achievement of students at regular intervals. Till date the NCERT has completed three cycles of such surveys. The outcomes of the latest third cycle of NAS is given as follows:

The survey results of class III have revealed that – In Language, average achievement of students was about 64%. In Mathematics, average achievement of students was 66%. The achievement of boys was slightly higher than the girls in Mathematics whereas girls’ achievement was slightly higher than boys in Language. The achievement of urban students was slightly higher than the rural students in both the subjects. In Language about 65% children were able to listen to a passage with understanding and respond correctly to question thereon, 86% children were able to look at pictures and match the correct name related to the picture, nearly 59% children were able to answer question correctly after reading a short story themselves. In Mathematics, 69% children could do two-digit additions, 65% children were able to subtract three digit numbers, 63% were able to do simple multiplication, 57% students could do division, 59% students were able to find out place value, 66% were able to correctly answer questions on geometrical shapes, 66% could do measurement of time correctly, 77% were able to answer questions on data handling correctly; 78% could do correctly on money related questions and 69% could do correctly on patterns.

The survey results of class V have revealed that – In Language, average achievement of students was about 50%. In Mathematics, average achievement of students was about 51%. In EVS, average achievement of students was about 54%. The achievement of girls was slightly higher than the boys in Language whereas boys’ achievement was slightly higher than girls in Mathematics. The achievement of rural students was slightly higher than the urban students in both Mathematics and EVS.

The survey results of class VIII have revealed that– In Language, average achievement of students was about 46%. In Mathematics, average achievement of students was about 32%. In Science, average achievement of students was about 36%. In Social Science, average achievement of students was about 38%. The achievement of girls was slightly higher than the boys in all the four subjects i.e. Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. The achievement of rural students was slightly higher than the urban students in Mathematics, Science and Social Science. However, urban students scored slightly better than rural students in Language.
