Pet animals provide dairy products, meat other benefits but transmit deadly diseases: Mayor

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), after giving a thought to the emerging hazardous situation and create awareness organized a workshop on Zoonotic Diseases (Diseases transmitted from animals to human being) in cooperation with National Association for Welfare of Animals and Research (NAWAR) on Saturday. The Workshop “Brain Storming Session on Zoonosis” was held at Raje Raghoji Bhosale Nagarbhavan as a part of NMC’s 150thYear Celebrations.

Nagpur News: Notwithstanding the dairy products, meat, and other important benefits the pet animals have been providing to mankind since the stone age, the very same animals have also been giving the mankind the deadliest diseases and claiming thousands of lives since ages. However, there is lack of awareness that makes the situation more and more dangerous.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), after giving a thought to the emerging hazardous situation and create awareness organized a workshop on Zoonotic Diseases (Diseases transmitted from animals to human being) in cooperation with National Association for Welfare of Animals and Research (NAWAR) on Saturday. The Workshop “Brain Storming Session on Zoonosis” was held at Raje Raghoji Bhosale Nagarbhavan as a part of NMC’s 150th Year Celebrations.

The Mayor Anil Sole, while addressing the workshop, said “The mankind is leaving with pet animals since the stone age. The pet animals (even wild animals) provide the most needed dairy products, meat and other crucial benefits in different ways. However, mankind has been afflicted by 61 per cent of diseases out of 1411 transmitted by animals, some of them being deadliest. The reasons might be different but what lacks is the awareness. The need of the hour is to create awareness about zoonotic diseases in a big way,” stressed the Mayor .

Those who were seated on the dais include the chief guest Dr Gyanendra Gongal, Scientist of World Health Organization, Deputy Mayor Jaitunnabi Ashfaq Ansari, NMC Commissioner Shyam Wardhane, Additional Municipal Commissioner Hemant Pawar, noted child specialist and President ofInternational President of Commonwealth Association of Health and Disability (COMHAD) Dr Uday Bodhankar, Ruling Party Leader Pravin Datke, NAWAR President Dr S B Balbudhe, Dr Vaishali Khandekar, Dr Ajay Pohankar, Chairman of Health Committee Ramesh Singare, Gandhibagh Zone Chairperson Rashmi Fadnavis and others.

Dr Gyanendra Gongal, in his keynote address said, “Like polio, smallpox, flu, the animals also transmit infectious diseases to human beings and most disturbingly, there is no independent way for precautionary measures. Therefore, I appreciate the NMC’s efforts to create awareness about zoonotic diseases.” Dr Gongal threw light on the activities of National Institute of Zoonosis.

The NMC Commissioner Shyam Wardhane expressed his happiness over the proposed setting up of Zoonosis Centre in Nagpur.

Dr Ajay Pohankar made the introductory speech. Dr (Mrs) Dicosta and Dr Sunil Agrawal conducted the workshop. Dr Prakash Urkude proposed the vote of thanks.
