For CBSE, this will be the first as the Board has till now conducted examinations only for secondary and school-leaving students. The minimum qualification for NET is post-graduation. The UGC will share its resourced people with CBSE to set the question papers in 80 subjects.

CBSE has the infrastructure and had developed the expertise from conducting school-leaving examinations, All-India Engineering Entrance Examination and All India Pre-Medical Test annually.

The NET examination is conducted in 80 subjects and the questions are matched for the post-graduate student. As many as 20,000 applicants appear for the examination, which is conducted twice a year in June and December. The NET, which was introduced by a government notification in 1988, was instituted to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research works.
