NMC’s Committee approves purchase of 600 piko-fall machines for poor widowed women

Nagpur: The Women and Child Welfare Committee of Nagpur Municipal Corporation on Tuesday approved a proposal for purchasing of 600 piko-fall sewing machines for 150 wards of the city including five nominated members. The 600 piko-fall machines will be distributed to 600 to poor, widowed and other under-privileged women in the 150 wards. Four machines will be supplied in each ward. The unanimous approval was accorded in a review meeting of the Women and Child Welfare Committee held on Tuesday.

The meeting, held at Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Hall in Civil Lines office of NMC, was presided over by Chairperson of the Committee Rashmi Fadnavis. The Special Invitees to this meeting were Chairman of Education Committee Gopal Bohre, Deputy Chairperson Sadhna Barde, Committee members Sulochana Kove, Swati Akhatkar, Jayashree Wadibhasme, Ishrat Nahid Mohd Jalil Ansari, Social Welfare Officer Sudha Iraskar and others.

Each piko-fall machine is expected to cost Rs 7,300 and the total cost of 600 machines is likely to be around Rs 43.80 lakh. The Chairperson of Women and Child Welfare Committee Rashmi Fadnavis directed the concerned officials to publish advertisements in local newspapers for inviting tenders for purchase of the machines.

Similarly, a rally by Bachat Groups would be taken out on October 2, 2015 for providing momentum to ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. The rally will start from Variety Square to Jhansi Rani Square with banners and other publicity material stressing the campaign.

The Education Committee Chairman Gopal Bohre expressed his anguish over rampant irregularities in “Khichdi” distribution in schools as part of Mid Day Meal scheme and advocated a high-level enquiry into the matter.
