The General Body Meeting of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) held on Tuesday witnessed a hostile situation when the NMC audaciously proposed to gobble up land of a temple by illegal means and at the same time “gifting” its own lands for various projects of other agencies. The land issue subsequently triggered exchange of hot words between office-bearers, Opposition members and Administration and sparks of charges-counter charges flew freely.
The issue of NMC constructing a gymnasium in the premises of Hanuman Temple in Shantinagar led to a ruckus. The situation turned hotter when the cornered NMC Administration brought a proposal for bringing the entire land housing the Hanuman Temple and gymnasium under its authority. Opposing the proposal, BJP’s (Ruling Party) Corporator Dayashankar Tiwari charged the Administration of handling the issue in slipshod manner. He said that every enquiry has established the NMC constructed the gymnasium at the vacant place of Hanuman Temple illegally and now wants to pocket the entire land housing the temple and gymnasium. At the same time, Tiwari raised a Call Attention Motion in connection with NMC’s own lands that have been acquisitioned by other agencies. “A high-end bus stand complex in Nandanvan, a market in Gokulpeth Market are being constructed by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on NMC’s lands. Moreover, apart from these lands, NIT and other departments have started their projects in five more NMC’s lands. The proposed Nandanvan Bus Stand Complex land was, in fact, taken from NMC for a housing scheme. Now, NMC should first take possession of this land under 7/12 system. Similarly, many of the NMC’s lands have been “captured’ by other agencies for their projects. But the Administration turning a blind eye towards this fact and trying to gobble up a temple land,” roared the BJP Corporator Dayashankar Tiwari.
The Mayor Anil Sole, taking a serious note of Tiwari’s assertion, directed the Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane to probe the issue of Hanuman Temple and gymnasium thoroughly and submit the report in the next General Bodyu Meeting. The Municipal Commissioner agreed to do so.
