In a major move, Maharashtra Government has on Monday reclassified and upgraded Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) from ‘B’ to ‘A’ Grade. The Government has, in all reclassified 26 municipal corporations in the state, based on various parameters, including 2011 census figures. However, since Nagpur being the Second Capital of Maharashtra, the civic body of city was exceptionally extended the status of ‘A’ Grade.
According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued in Mumbai on Monday, cities with populations of one crore have been classified as ‘A+’ Grade and so on, up to ‘D’ grade.
The Municipal Corporation of Mumbai is the only one with an ‘A+’ Grade in the list.
Corporations of Pune and Nagpur have been upgraded from ‘B’ to ‘A’, while municipal bodies like Pimpri-Chinchwad, Thane and Nashik have been upgraded from ‘C’ to ‘B’.
Municipal bodies of Kalyan-Dombivili, Aurangabad and Vasai-Virar have been upgraded from ‘D’ to ‘C’, while Navi Mumbai’s status as ‘C’ Grade municipal body has been retained.
The Government Resolution also stated that the ‘D’ grades of 16 other municipal corporations have been retained.
However, the Government made an exception for Nagpur, since it is a Second Capital of the State, besides Nashik, since the city’s per capita income exceeds norms as compared to its population, the Maharashtra Government Resolution said.
The various parameters, including 2011 census figures, considered for reclassifying and upgrading the Municipal bodies included more than one crore population and Rs 50,000 per capita income for ‘A+’ Grade while civic bodies having population from 25 lakh to one crore and Rs 8000 per capita income were extended the ‘A’ Grade. Similarly, ‘B’ Grade for cities having population from 15 lakh to 25 lakh and Rs 5000 per capita income have been reclassified and upgraded accordingly and and so on, up to ‘D’ grade.
