Nagpur hits streets for ‘Run for Unity’ to mark birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The Friday the October 31 will be remembered in Nagpur City as a historic day in the years to come for various momentous reasons. First, hundreds of citizens from all walks of life saluted the Iron Man of India and the first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary by participating in a ‘Run for Unity’ to mark National Unity Day, and the second, the darling of Nagpur, Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to head the first BJP Government in State. Incidentally, Fadnavis led the ‘Run for Unity’ in Mumbai by participating in enthusiastically.

The Central Government has decided to observe the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31 as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” (National Unity Day) every year.

The Administration in Nagpur, as part of Government’s decision, organized the ‘Run for Unity’ from Samvidhan Chowk (RBI Square) in which hundreds of citizens, officials, employees, students, sportspersons, police personnel, National Service Scheme (NSS) men and women, NCC cadets participated. The participants included 10-year old boy and girl skaters and 75-year old grandfathers and grandmothers as well.

At the outset, Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar administered the National Unity Day oath to those present on the occasion. Others seated on the dais include Joint Police Commissioner Anupkumar Singh, Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane, District Collector Abhishek Krishna, Chief Executive Officer Shivajirao Jondhale, Additional Municipal Commissioner Hemant Pawar, Sports Deputy Director Vijay Santan, and Deputy Divisional Commissioner Appasaheb Dhulaj.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the ‘Run for Unity’ started at 8.30 am from Samvidhan Chowk and traversed through Akashvani Chowk (AIR Square), VCA Ground, NIT and culminated at Samvidhan Square. Others who participated in the ‘Run for Unity’ are Deputy District Collectors Ravindra Kumbhare, Girish Joshi, Sangitrao, Ajay Ramteke, Prakash Patil, Dilip Savarkar, Asha Pathan, Anita Meshram, Sujata Gandhe and hundreds of other Government officials and employees.

The programme was conducted by Additional Municipal Deputy Commissioner Pramod Bhusari while Renuka Deshkar compered it.
