Nagpur: In a very fatal accident that occurred Jungawani village on the Nagpur-Narsingpur road in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, three city doctors were among five were killed on May 30, 2015.
The five were travelling in a Swift car (MH 40 AC 5852) when it rammed into an oncoming truck at top seed between 6.30 and 7am on Saturday. An offence has been registered against truck driver Balkar Singh under section 304 (A) of the Indian penal code for causing culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The name of the car owner is yet to be established.
Well-known Nagpur orthopaedic surgeon Dr Anil Golhar’s son Dr Saket was behind the wheels. The others have been identified as Dr Ashish Bhandole from Khaparkheda, Dr Parmeshwar Lakshatwar, and Satyendra Singh and Vijay Kumar Thakre – the two MRs.
Police stated that the victims had to be extricated from the mashed vehicles after toiling for more than a couple of hours. Two JCB machines and a tractor had to be engaged to separate the mangled remains of the vehicles and bring the bodies out.
The five were heading to Sagar in MP to attend a medical camp being held by a charitable trust. Police said that none of the five were using the seat belt.
The incident took place shortly after the car had negotiated a bend. According to eyewitnesses, there were no precautionary boards on the highway to indicate the approaching bend and no proper markings on the road too.
Dr Saket was completing his masters (orthopaedics) at the city’s Lata Mangeshkar Hospital. Lakshatwar hailed from Nanded. Complete details about the other three is not known.
Saket’s car, according to cops from the Amarwada police station which is the closest to the spot, had cut its lane and gone on to collide with the truck (PB A 5948) which was loaded with plywood. The impact of the hit was such that Dr Saket’s car got stuck under the engine of the truck after crashing through its bonnet.
A police officer stated that the passengers in the back seat were found piled up on the bodies on the front seat. “It is likely that the driver may have misjudged while trying to overtake another vehicle or may have fallen asleep for a brief moment,” he said.
Amarwada police station in-charge Mangalsingh Dhurve rushed to the accident spot after being informed by the manager of a local toll tax collection booth manager. Other senior officers including Addl SP Rajesh Tripathi followed too. Town Inspector Dhurve stated that Dr Ashish’s body was the first to be removed from the mangled car at around 11am.
The family members of Dr Saket and others were informed of the accident by local police who got the numbers after going through the call records on the cell phones of the victims as well as inspecting the car documents. Saket’s father Dr Anil, elder brother Dr Vaibhav and others including city-based medical practitioners, like Dr Ashok Arbat and Dr Uday Mahorkar, reached the spot.
The bodies were later taken to the public health centre in Amarwada for post-mortem before they were handed over to the family members. Later, they were brought to Ramdaspeth residence of Dr Golhar from where the respective family members were handed over the bodies. The funeral of Dr Saket is scheduled at 7.30am at Mokshadam Ghat.
It’s learnt that Chhindwara district collector Mahesh Chandra Choudhary has announced monetary compensation to the victim’s family.
