Metro Rail project: European Investment Bank team holds meet with NIT officials

d238028-largeNagpur: The team of European Investment Bank visited the office of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on Thursday in order to understand the role of NIT in the Nagpur Metro project.

NIT chairman Shyam Wardhane made an impressive presentation explaining how the NIT was appointed as the nodal agency by the government for the project before the formation of the SPV and the various contributions made by the NIT to the project.

The visiting team was pleased to note the set of initial work done by the NIT in terms of appointing the DMRC for preparation of the DPR of the Nagpur Metro project, the UMTC for preparation of Comprehensive Mobility Plan, Transit Oriented Development Plan & Plan for Feeder Bus System for the Nagpur City. These reports serve as the base of the Nagpur Metro project.

The NIT also contributed in terms of transferring land to the Nagpur Metro for their administrative office at Deekshabhoomi as well as in terms of funding the project. At present the NIT has contributed 30 crore to the project in terms of grant and has made a provision of 150 crore for the current fiscal. Many senior NIT officials have also been deputed to expedite the work. Wardhane is also one of the directors of of the project.

The visiting team also enquired about the various other roles of NIT in terms of the development of the city as well as the Nagpur metro region. The team also acknowledged the pivotal role of NIT in bringing the metro rail project to its current stage. The team exhibited their interest in getting associated with the metro rail project and showed their inclination towards financing the project.

Present on the occasion were the team of the European Investment Bank (EIB) consisting of deputy economic advisor Piers Vickers, social development specialist Sladjana Cosie, country manager of South Asia Sunita Lukkhoo and sr. transport specialist Piers Vickers.

While from NIT’s side superintending engineer Sunil Gujjelwar, assistant engineer of housing Sandeep Bapat, and Sonovne of Nagpur Metro were present.
