Marathon Raids : Gambling dens busted at 14 places, 17 arrested

Nagpur: Targetting the mushrooming gambling dens in Nagpur, the city crime branch has carried out marathon raids on Thursday. The cops formed squads and cracked down on as many as 14 places and arrested 17 people. Most of these gamblers are identifed as ones who also bet big on cricket matches.

These raids were conducted as per the directives of city crime branch deputy commissioner Sambhaji Kadam and ACP Somanth Waghchoure. The places mainly include gambling dens, satta patti spots and similar other places. The material worth Rs 1.17 lakh was also seized during the raid.

The big action has sent ripples among the operators of the illegal business. Interestingly, the crime branch carried out the entire operation secretly without giving a hint of it to the local police in the concerned areas. This act of crime branch has not only brought resentment among the cops but it also did not go down well with the city police commissioner Dr K Venkasham.

Police sources said the raids were conducted in Ganeshpeth, Shanti Nagar, Gittikhadan, Ambazari, Zaripatka, Kalamna, Pratap Nagar, Kotwali, Mankapur, Nandanvan and Imambada police station areas.
Among those arrested from different places are Firoz Akhtar Sheikh Naeem, Itwari, Dilip Madhukar Tule, Ganjipeth, Ravindra Savarkar, Subhash Manarkar, Chandan Arkhail, Lakshman Vaidya, Rajendra Govindrao Mate, Ambazari, Nilesh Govindrao Padole, Damodar Krishnaroa Moundekar, Chintu Dharamdas Nandeshwar, Naresh Krishnaji Borker, Ramu Sukhaji Matane, Ashok Sadashiv Thavkar, Raees Ahmed Siddiqui, Ashfaq Rafique Khan, Praveen Kamble and other accused. One more accused Raja Khan is absconding.

Liquor worth Rs 23,000 seized at Jaitala Road

The crime branch squad has intercepted a man in front of Rahi hall on Jaitala road and seized foreign liquor worth Rs 23,000 from his possession. The accused has been identified as Mohitrao Talwar, resident of Mecosabagh. Meanwhile, the crime branch squad has also seized 80 bottles of country liquor from Latesh Sahebrao Barange at Santra Market in Ganeshpeth.
