Alleging step-motherly treatment over basic amenities, the students of BFSc of Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) gheraod the Vice Chancellor’s office on Saturday demanding his intervention on the issue.
The students’ main demand included construction of college building, hostel, common room, ladies toilet, auditorium, college bus, stipend, and initiation of PG programme. The present college, situated near Telangkhedi temple, does not have a proper infrastructure. The college has a very good academic record, however even common facilities are not provided to the students and the college is being continuously ignored by the authorities as compared to their animal husbandry counterparts who have most of the facilities, said the protesting students.
Speaking with Nagpur Today, the students shared some of their ordeals. “There is urgent need of common room for girls & boys as we have to go to hatchery for practicals and need to change in order to get into the ponds. Also during monsoons, students have to go to hatchery daily but due to lack of proper roads it becomes difficult to reach the fish farm,” lamented the 4th year students.
Most of the students in the college are from outside Nagpur and are basically coming from rural areas and are staying in private houses on rent because there is no hostel facility in the college. The college does not have a proper toilet facility for girls and boys, either. There is no proper place for organizing any event. Students either gather in class or in open ground to do so in absence of an auditorium. The ordeal does not end here. As a professional degree programme the students have to go to nearby reservoirs and lakes for practicals at their own expense, this is when that the institute has own bus which is not being utilized, claimed the students.
University’s version:
Taking cognizance of the students’ demands, the Vice Chancellor, MAFSU Aditya Kumar Mishra agreed to meet the demands and also handed over an assurance letter to students’ representatives in the presence of Registrar Samant Tiwari.
The letter stated that the construction of college building and hostels could not be taken up primarily due to restrictions put forth by forest department. But since restrictions have now been relaxed the matter will be pursued aggressively to obtain funds and construction of the building will be started at the earliest.
For immediate convenience of the students, the university may shift the college to the old university building on Hazari Pahad road. The common room facility and ladies toilet will be provided immediately. University principally agreed to provide college bus for education purpose, however the proposal for the same will be placed before Executive Council and on approval, the bus will be purchased.
The issue of providing stipend will be pursued at Government level and the construction of approach road to the ponds will be undertaken immediately with the university’s resources, said the VC’s letter.
