“Let’s play some cricket!”

Nagpur Today.

Just an hour before the sun was ready to set, a bevy of beauties gathered at the Parsee ‘Dakhma’ or tower of Silence in Nagpur which also has a play ground attached to it. They had a serious agenda on mind – playing cricket! Which they did, albeit with a rubber ball but a very serious attitude. It was no time to kid around – the annual RCL – Rotary Cricket League – is just two days away and the ladies are determined to put up a grand show with some great shots and smart bowling. (Please overlook some dropped catches- we are not perfect!)

dsc06550Aged from 30 to 60+ all these ladies are Rotarians, Rotary Annes or friends thereof. (Rotary clubs like the Main club, North and Downtown are conspicuously seen).

dsc06623Doctors, business women, self employed entrepreneurs, social workers, home makers, these women come from all walks of life and their purpose for taking part in the RCL is not to get some exercise, but exercise their influence in helping financially some really needy underprivileged women.

As their press release tells you:

“Rotary Cricket League (RCL) is back with its third season…Hosted by Rotary Club of Nagpur, this time open to the ladies of the general public as well…Like every year it is a pairs cricket format..The composition of the pair will be decided by the bidding done by the pre invited bidders at the auction gala dinner to be held on Dec 2 …

The final matches will be on Sunday, December 4 at Ambedkar Ground where 21 teams will compete for the top prize..Dinshaws is the main sponsor of the event..Mickey Mehta ‘ s Wellness Centre is the Fitness sponsor and Dainik bhaskar and Radio Mirchi are the media partners..

The pre invited bidders taking part in the auction are Universal Builders, Taubys, Vidarbha Ceramics, Bawas, Kutz, Me!bath, Revayur, Hardeo, Evista, NV Graphics, Handmaze, Dream Careers Kotak, ACE hospital, LIC, Maheshwari jewellers, Krims…

The proceeds of this event will be used to finance the Microcredit initiative of the club…”

We caught at the nets yesterday the following:
Nilufer Rana, Chairperson for the event, Sharmila Vali, Director Revayur, Nagpur, Dr. Namrata Rathod, Gynaecologist, Urvi Suri, Organic farmer, salad greens being her specialty and others like Neeta Singh, Neharika Daga, Seema Jaisinghani, Ritika Singhvi, Kanika Dewani, Deepa Jamwal, recently retired Professor from Hislop, Vinita Bahri, Shivani Bidaye, Fatima Shakir, she runs a boutique and is a designer, Reeta Rupani, Harleen Oberoi, Sudha Jeswani, Sunita Gadge, Kiran Sahu, Rakhi Upadhaya, Vahbiz Dongajee, ace wicket keeper and Archana Javery. Hetal Sampat, C.A. was the one who invited NT to ‘come play!’

( We are sure all the above ladies are into something creative, helpful to society and enterprising – we described only some because we could not chat them up all. They were busy playing after all!)

The very fact that they had dropped everything else and are busy practicing a tiring team game – despite pulled muscles, aching legs and even scraped knees! – is because they care for the less fortunate and are willing to extend a helping hand. With cricket gloves on – metaphorically at least!
