Kidney transplant centre to come up at Super Speciality Hospital

Nagpur: Finally approval to start kidney transplant center at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) affiliated to Government Medical College and Hospital has been received. A four member committee of State government inspected SSH on Friday. Approval was given after SSH management assured in writing that shortcomings will be removed. After this for the first time in State that kidney transplant center will become functional in Nagpur”s government hospital.

Thousands of patients are living on dialysis in State due to kidney failure. Over 1,000 patients are waiting for kidney transplant. On one hand waiting list of organ transplantation from cadaver of a person who is declared brain dead, patients don”t get organ donors due to strict government regulations. These patients have no option left to undergo dialysis. Kidney transplant is not done in government hospital. The poor patients cannot afford high cost of organ transplant. But now after approval for kidney transplant center at Super Specialty Hospital, poor and general patients will be benefited. Interestingly, the expenditure on kidney transplant will be done through Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana due to which patients under BPL and APL categories will be benefited a lot.

Efforts to start kidney transplant center at Super Specialty Hospital were going on since many years. Recently, dean Dr Abhimanyu Niswade took initiative and applied for inspection for kidney transplant center to State government. Accordingly, a four member committee reached Super Specialty Hospital at 11 am on Friday. The team visited nephrology and urology departments of Super Specialty Hospital. They held discussions with doctors of kidney transplant operation center and ward. They listed shortcomings found before dean. The committee gave approval after dean and concerned doctors gave written assurance to remove shortcoming.
