Nagpur: Unidentified burglars decamped with cash of 17 lakh from a jeweller’s showroom in Itwari on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday. The incident came to light on Tuesday morning.

Police said that the complainant Prashant Devidas Raut (41), a resident of Vaishali Nagar, owns a showroom named ‘Raut Imitation Jewellery’ near Bohra Masjid in Itwari general market. On Monday, as usual Raut closed his showroom and went home. When Raut opened the showroom on Tuesday morning he was shocked to see his locker in disarray. Unidentified theives had entered his showroom after midnight and after breaking open the locker decamped with cash of 17 lakh. Raut immediately informed about the theft to police. Tahsil police have registered a case of burglary and are investigating the matter further.

Meanwhile, the news of the daring burglary spread like wildfire in the market. Shopkeepers and residents of the locality assembled in front of the showroom before the cops could arrive. Preliminary investigations revealed that the burglars made their way into the showroom by climbing the 4-storeyed building. They broke open the iron door on the top of the building and made their way downstairs through the staircase.

On getting the news, senior police officials including deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Abhinash Kumar, DCP (Crime) Deepali Masirkar and others rushed to the spot. They took stock of the situation. After ascertaining the situation, police surmised that the burglary was well planned. Inspite of several CCTV cameras installed in and out of the showroom, the theives ensured that they were not caught in any of the cameras. The camera on top of the building was found to be pointing towards the sky and hence no footage of the burglars is available.
