Nagpur: The Institute of Military Law (IML), a premier institute of armed forces, celebrated its silver jubilee on Saturday at its premises in Kamptee near here.
IML is a unique training institute incorporating complete administrative and academic infrastructure together with flexibility for innovations and experimentation in the pursuit of excellence.
The institute is presently commanded by Colonel Sandeep Kumar.
The Institute of Military Law, Kamptee, a Cat `A’ Establishment of Indian Army which imparts training in matters like maintenance of discipline and administration of justice to the Officers of three services, i.e. Army, Navy and Air Force as also to Para Military Forces, celebrated its 25th Raising Day on 16 May 2015 with fervor and gusto. The Institute is one of its kind in whole of Asia to train the defence service officers in the military and allied laws. The Institute was inaugurated at Kamptee way back on 16 May 1990 by Maj Gen A B Gorthi, AVSM, VSM (Retd), the then Judge Advocate General (Army).
On this auspicious occasion gracious visit of Maj Gen P K Sharma, Judge Advocate General (Army) added splendor to the celebration.

The raising day festivities commenced on 16 May 2015 with a special prayer at “Sarwa Dharma Sthal”. The first day cover was released by Maj Gen P K Sharma, Judge Advocate General. The silver jubilee celebrations marked the renaming of the administrative block as “A B GORTHI BLOCK”, auditorium as “BR PRASHAR AUDITORIUM” and training block as “S K SANAN BLOCK”. The pathway to the IML (Home of the Military Lawyers) was named after its founder Commandant, Col G K Sharma as “G K SHARMA MARG”. On this occasion, a Special Sainik Sammelan was held under the chairmanship of the Judge Advocate General, Maj Gen P K Sharma. Addressing the Officers, men and civilian staff of the Institute, Judge Advocate General appreciated the role of the Institute as facilitator in “Justice Delivery System in the Army” and exhorted them to rededicate themselves in achieving excellence in every task entrusted to them.

The Raising Day festivities included briefing on professional training matters by Col Sandeep Kumar Commandant, Institute of Military Law to Maj Gen P K Sharma, Judge Advocate General. He apprised the Judge Advocate General about the latest improvements undertaken by the Institute in administrative and professional sides. A feedback about the training imparted to the student officers which included officers from Friendly Foreign Countries such as Nepal, Seychelles, Botswana, Tonga, USA was also given by the Commandant. The courses recently run by the Institute included Judge Advocates Course (Young Officers Course), Record Officers Law Course, Middle Level Staff Officers and Commanders Course and Judge Advocates Advance Course. On 17 May 2015, a community dinner “Barakhana” was organised to foster esprit-de-corps amongst the troops, civilians, Officers and their families.
In the evening, a social get together was organised in the Officers’ Mess of Institute of Military Law, Kamptee, which was attended by Hon’ble Judges of High Court, Nagpur Bench, Senior Army Officers and other civilian dignitaries wherein the Silver Jubilee trophy was also unveiled.
