Husband, other kin held for abetting suicide of 20-yr old woman over dowry in Kalamna

Nagpur: Kalamna police on Friday arrested husband and his brother on the charges of abetting suicide of a young married woman over dowry. Mother-in-law of the deceased woman has been booked.

According to police, the deceased Rajkanya Sachin Tandekar (20), resident of Shitala Mata Slums, Chikhli, Nagpur had on Thursday around 10.30 am committed suicide by setting her ablaze after pouring kerosene on herself. On the basis of a complaint lodged by her husband Sachin Dilip Tandekar (23), police had registered a case of accidental death.

However, a thorough probe revealed that the three accused, husband Sachin Dilip Tandekar, brother-in-law Ashish Dilip Tandekar and mother-in-law tormented Rajkanya, mentally and physically, for failing to meet their dowry demand. Fed up with the torture, Rajkanya took the extreme step.

Kalamna API Thakre, on the basis of a complaint filed by Gajanan Pandurang Jagne (50), native of Madhya Pradesh, registered an offence against the three accused husband Sachin Tandekar, brother-in-law Ashish Tandekar and mother-in-law under Sections 498(A), 306, 34 of the IPC and placed Sachin and Ashish under arrest. Further probe is underway.
