Nagpur: Heavy rains lashed Nagpur city on Tuesday afternoon, which went on to wreak a havoc in the normal lives of Nagpur’s citizens. Continuous rains for over an hour drowned most of the low lying areas on the city. The traffic remained disturbed and the routine activities came to stand still for some time.
Meanwhile, the youths were seen heaving a sigh of relief from the heavy humidity that engulfed city for the past few days.
Reports of water logging in most of the households poured in, however the worst affected are Panchpaoli, Nara Nari, Jaripatka, Dhantoli and other areas where the ground floor houses received knee deep water.
Youth see this as an atmosphere that infuses life
Youth of the city saw this heavy downpour as an apt moment to get wet and enjoy it. Many were seen speeding and enjoying getting wet. While the road-side tea kiosks saw brisk business, many pakoda wallahs were not left behind and were seen doing good business from the commuters who took shelter in the shaded areas of the road-side food kiosks.
Rains bring to fore the poor preparedness of civic authorities
The apathy and negligent attitude of the civic authorities in their preparedness to face the monsoon season came to fore with continuous downpour that brought with it many incidents of water logging in many areas of the city.
Low lying area submerged in water
Most of the shopping complexes with basement shopping got completely submerged in the aftermath of heavy rains. Most of the streets and nullahs went overflowing and as a result the traffic came to standstill. Weather reports suggest heavy rains in the next 48 hours.
DCP Traffic’s office in knee deep water
The Office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) is in knee deep water. The office is situated at a stone’s throw distance from Head Office of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The DCP’s entering the office and exiting from his office has to be in knee deep water. In-spite of repeated requests, the NMC has not bothered to clear the canals or rain-water drains made on both sides of the road which in-turn has caused the water to get clogged in many areas of the city.
Areas of railway bridges under hip-deep water
There are many railway bridges under which roads are made for commuters to traverse from the East to the West side of the city or vice-versa. The areas under the railway bridges have hip deep water clogged. The DCP Traffic Bharat Tangde had informed the Civic authorities through letter about the areas where water logging is noticed almost every monsoon season. Yet the civic authorities seem to have ignored the caution resulting in many commuters facing harrowing experience.
