HC upholds death sentence awarded to rapist and murderer Shatrughna Meshram

  • The 21-year old Shatrughna Meshram had brutally raped and murdered his 2-year old niece on February 11, 2013. The District and Sessions Court had ruled that the convict be hanged till death.

Nagpur: The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court on Monday upheld the death sentence awarded to Shatrughna Meshram by a District and Sessions Court. The Division Bench of Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice Prasanna Vairale dismissed the appeal filed by Meshram who was convicted and sentenced to death by Yavatmal District and Sessions Court in the rape and murder case.

In a macabre incident that jolted the very core of humanity, the 21-year old Shatrughna Meshram had brutally raped and murdered his own 2-year old niece on February 11, 2013.

The Yavatmal District and Sessions Court, on August 14 the same year, found Shatrughna Meshram guilty of the outrageous and heinous crime and sentenced him to undergo two life imprisonments and to be hanged till death as well.

The rapist and murderer knocked the doors of High Court against his conviction and also the death sentence. The hearing in the case was over on September 29 and the High Court had reserved its ruling. On Monday (Oct 12), the Division Bench of the High Court upheld the death sentence awarded by the lower court in the crime that ripped the very fabric of relationship apart and rattled the humanity.
