Cops bust cricket betting racket in Sadar, 3 bookies hailing from AP arrested

Nagpur: Sadar police on Saturday busted a cricket betting racket and arrested three bookies, all hailing from Andhra Pradesh. One bookie managed to escape the police net and absconding. A search is underway to nab him. Betting material worth over Rs 1 lakh has been seized.

The Assistant Police Inspector Gaja received a secret tip off that betting on match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad was in progress in an apartment flat in Byramji Town. Armed with the tip-off, a team of Sadar police raided the Flat No. 307, Sai Lalit Apartment, Byramji Town, around5.45 pm on Saturday. The raiding cops found some persons busy in accepting betting on a IPL cricket match. The accused were identified as Aziz Ali Mohd Sataji (39), Danish Salim Damani (20), and Umed Gulam Hussain (39), all natives of Secunderabad (Andhra Pradesh) but presently residing in Byramji Town, Nagpur. The accused bookies were found accepting betting on the IPL T20 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad that was being played on Saturday. The raiding cops seized a TV, laptop, set top box and other material worth over Rs 1 lakh from the spot. However, an unidentified bookie managed to escape the police net and went absconding.

An offence under Sections 4, 5 of Prevention of Gambling Act was registered at Sadar Police Station and the three accused bookies were placed under arrest. Cops have launched a search to nab the absconding bookie.
