Akku Yadav murder trial begins today.

Eight years ago Bharat Kalicharan Yadav aka Akku Yadav was lynched by a mob of women mainly comprising of his victims in a Nyay Mandir Courtroom of August, Friday the 13th, 2004. This incident portraying Women power grabbed media attention nation and world wide. It was a chilling tale of crime and punishment. Only, the punishment was meted out not by law enforcement agencies but by the enraged women themselves. Yadav had 24 cases of assault, dacoity, murder, molestation and extortion against him, he had been arrested 12 times in as many years but had managed to secure bail on each occasion. The women of Kasturba Basti couldn’t bear any more as Akku and his men would would knock at midnight and continue to assault men, rape women and kidnap children. On the day Akku was to be presented before the court, a woman threw chilly powder in Akku’s eyes while he was being taken to the courtroom by the cops. Then the other accused stormed into the courtroom and killed Akku with stones, knives, swords and other weapons.

The much awaited trial in the sensational murder case will begin at an adhoc court in Suyog Building. It is technically a case of Custodial death. The state CID took over investigations and arrested 21 persons including a woman and a lawyer on the charges under Sections 120(b), 121(A), 143, 147, 148, 149, 302, 353, 332, 326, 427 of the IPC read with Sections 3 and 4 of Damage to Public Property Act. The State CID completed its probe and chargesheeted the accused persons. The court is expected to examine as many as 85 witnesses in the case.
