Abhigyan Shakuntalam enthralls audience

d274784-largeNagpur: The epic poetic drama, ‘Abhigyan Shakuntalam’, written by legendry poet Kalidas was adapted into an enchanting dance-drama was presented by the students of Kishor Nritya Niketan, run by Swar Sangam Sanskrutik Manch. The dance drama was presented on March 19 at Pt Vasantrao Deshpande hall. This musical dance drama was based on Bharatanatyam and folk dance.

Based on the writings of poet Kalidas, the dance-drama caught the spirit of the same. The music and the Sanskrit dialogues were the attractions. Around 40 students performed in the dance drama.

The programme began with the lamp lighting ceremony. Divisional commissioner Anup Kumar graced the function as the chief guest.

Faculty of Indian Philosophy, religion and culture, Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, Dr Penna Madhusudan, presided over the function. Senior regional manager, Maharastra tourism development corporation, Hanumant Hede and Deepak Nilawar were also prominently present for the function.

The script and lyrics of the dance-drama was written by Dr Leena Rastogi, music score was especially made for the dance-drama in Sanskrit and Hindi by Shailesh Dani. Lights were done by Mithun Mitra.

The costumes for the dance-drama were designed and stitched from Bangalore, Chennai and Nagpur. The dance-drama was directed by the dancing duo Dr Kishoree and Kishor Hampiholi.

The main roles were played by Manavendra Bhat, Dr Kishoree, Sonakahi Dongre, Pooja Mude, Amruta Chitale, Arundhati Pande. The story depicted the love story of Shakuntala, daughter of Menaka (apsara) and Vishwamitra raised by sage Kanva in his ashram and Dushanta a mighty king.
