Nagpur: In yet another incident of daylight bag-lifting, two motorcycle-borne muggers on Tuesday targeted a peon of a credit society and decamped with a bag containing Rs 4 lakh on a busy road. The daylight robbery sent ripples across the city and also put the cops on their toes.

According to details, Kailash Jagan Divte (33), resident of Hudkeshwar, works as a peon in New Nagpur Urban Credit Cooperative Society situated in Om Nagar, Sakkardara. Divte is associated with the Society since the past 12 years. On Tuesday, around 11 am, the peon Kailash Divte first went to Saraswat Bank, Agrasen Square to deposit Rs 22,000 in the account of Society’s Vice President Moreshwar Sor (46), resident of 473, Mahalaxmi Bhavan, Tiranga Square, Nehru Nagar. Divte was also carrying a bag containing Rs 4 lakh belonging to the Credit Coop Society to be deposited in Yes Bank near Telephone Exchange Square in Lakadganj. After depositing Rs 22,000 in Sor’s account in Saraswat Bank, Divte proceeded to deposit Society’s Rs 4 lakh in Yes Bank. He was passing through Rahate Hospital to Telephone Exchange Square road around 11.30 am. Divte was riding Bajaj CT motorcycle. At the same time, the two unidentified muggers riding a Splendour motorcycle were chasing him slyly. At an opportune spot on the busy road, the two criminals accosted Divte and even before he could sense any trouble threw chili powder in his eyes. The sudden chili attack left Divte bewildered and he stopped his motorcycle. At the same time the two goons snatched the black bag containing Rs 4 lakh and speeded away. However, the audacious act was noticed by passersby who immediately started shouting “Chor Chor” (thief, thief). Coincidently, a police constable, attached to Lakadganj Police Station, Nitin Bawankule, happened to be at the spot. He heard the shouts and immediately started chasing the two motorcycle borne robbers on his Charlie motorcycle. After a long chase, the constable came near the fleeing robbers in Ganga-Jamuna area and rammed his mobike into the motorcycle of the goons from behind in order to make them immobile. But unfortunately, the motorcycle of the constable itself slipped and he fell down. Taking advantage of the situation, the two robbers managed to flee with the bag containing Rs 4 lakh still in their hands.

Police Inspector Mane told Nagpur Today that the footages from the nearby CCTV cameras are being scanned to establish the identity of the motorcycle borne robbers.
